Chinese Hypertension League

The League was founded on the basis of the coordinating group for the National Seventh Five‑Year Plan key research project entitled "Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Treatment Trial," under the leadership of Professors Lisheng Liu and Lansheng Gong. The CHL was led by President and Professor Zhao‑Su Wu from 2010‑2017. The current President of CHL is Professor Jiguang Wang, who also serves as Director of the Shanghai Institute of Hypertension, Chief of the Department of Hypertension at Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

The aims of CHL are:

Since 1999, CHL and its partner institutions have organised 28 international symposiums on hypertension and related diseases. The Asia Pacific Congress of Hypertension (APCH) was held in 2007 and again in 2023, and in 2018, CHL hosted the ISH 2018 Scientific Meeting in Beijing. These events have significantly elevated China's academic standing in the field and greatly facilitated both domestic and international scientific exchange.

In 1999, CHL convened a panel of experts to develop the Chinese Guidelines for the Management of Hypertension, with revised editions featuring distinctive Chinese characteristics completed in 2005, 2010, 2018, and 2024. These guidelines have played a pivotal role in standardising hypertension prevention and treatment across China. To promote and disseminate the guidelines, CHL has organised numerous continuing education initiatives over nearly two decades, including more than a thousand workshops and training sessions nationwide, reaching hundreds of thousands of physicians. These efforts have substantially enhanced the knowledge and skills of primary care providers in hypertension management and have effectively advanced the national hypertension control agenda.

CHL has also provided pro bono support for the continuing education of African physicians, hosted the World Hypertension Congress and the WHL Council Meeting in Shanghai, and organised community‑based functional hypertension control projects. Additionally, CHL has participated in the WHO cardiovascular health research initiative in developing countries and implemented community hypertension control programmes, making earnest efforts to explore hypertension management models suited to China's specific national conditions.
